Is the Data We Upload to AI Tools Safe? Key Findings from 2026 Reports

As artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude become increasingly common in everyday life and the business world, concerns about data security continue to grow. Cybersecurity reports published in 2026 reveal that employees sharing sensitive information through AI platforms can pose significant risks to organizations. So, how secure is the data we upload to AI tools?

The Growing Use of AI Brings New Security Risks

Artificial intelligence technologies offer significant advantages in areas such as content creation, software development, data analysis, and document preparation. However, the widespread adoption of these tools also raises new questions about the protection of personal and corporate information.

According to the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026 report, published in January 2026, 87% of respondents identified AI-related vulnerabilities as the fastest-growing cyber risk in 2025.

The same report found that 94% of respondents expected artificial intelligence to be the most significant factor shaping changes in cybersecurity in 2026.

These findings demonstrate that AI is not only transforming business processes but also creating a need to reassess data security strategies.

33% of Employees Share Sensitive Information with Unauthorized AI Tools

One of the major risks associated with AI adoption is employees uploading sensitive information to platforms that have not been approved by their organizations.

According to research findings released by Gartner in February 2026, more than 57% of participants in a survey of 175 employees reported using personal generative AI accounts for work-related purposes. Meanwhile, 33% admitted entering sensitive information into unauthorized AI tools.

These findings indicate that employees may operate outside their organizations' data security policies when integrating AI tools into their daily workflows.

In particular, the uncontrolled sharing of sensitive content, including customer information, internal company documents, financial data, and source code, can create significant risks to corporate data privacy.

What Is Shadow AI, and Why Does It Pose a Risk to Companies?

One concept receiving increasing attention in cybersecurity is Shadow AI.

Shadow AI refers to employees using artificial intelligence tools that have not been approved by their organizations or undergone appropriate security assessments.

According to Verizon's Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR), published in May 2026, the percentage of employees regularly using AI on corporate devices increased from 15% in the previous year to 45%.

The report also noted that Shadow AI usage had become the third most common category of non-malicious employee policy violations detected by data loss prevention (DLP) systems.

This highlights how tools used by employees to improve productivity can potentially expose corporate information to security risks when proper safeguards are not in place.

What Happens to Data Uploaded to ChatGPT and Other AI Tools?

How data submitted to AI platforms is processed depends on the service being used and the platform's privacy policies.

Documents uploaded or messages entered by users may be processed within the platform's systems to provide the requested services. Data retention periods, whether information is used for model improvement, and access conditions can vary depending on the service's features and account settings.

Therefore, uploading information to an AI tool does not automatically mean that the information becomes publicly accessible. However, sharing sensitive data without appropriate controls can create privacy and compliance challenges, particularly in corporate environments.

Users should review the data processing terms and privacy settings of AI platforms before using them.

How Do AI Agents Affect Data Security?

Another significant development in 2026 is the growing adoption of AI agents capable of performing tasks autonomously.

According to Gartner's analysis of cybersecurity trends for 2026, the increasing use of AI agents within organizations is creating new attack surfaces.

Unlike traditional conversational AI systems, these agents can connect to various applications, access data, and perform actions based on their assigned permissions.

While these capabilities improve productivity, they also introduce risks such as misconfigured access permissions, insecure integrations, and insufficient monitoring mechanisms.

Cybersecurity experts emphasize that organizations should incorporate AI agents into their security policies and clearly define which information and systems these agents are authorized to access.

How Can Personal Data Be Protected When Using AI?

The secure use of AI tools is essential for both individual users and organizations. Several important measures can help reduce data security risks:

  • Review sensitive information before sharing: Avoid uploading identification numbers, passwords, customer data, or confidential company documents to AI tools without the necessary authorization.
  • Check privacy settings: Review the data retention and processing policies of the AI platform you use.
  • Use organization-approved tools: Choose AI solutions that have undergone appropriate security assessments for work-related activities.
  • Limit access permissions: Grant AI applications access only to the systems and data required to perform their intended tasks.
  • Increase employee awareness: Establish AI-specific data security policies and provide training to help employees understand potential risks.

Data Security Is Becoming Even More Important in the Age of AI

As artificial intelligence technologies continue to evolve, data security is becoming one of the most important aspects of digital transformation.

Research published in 2026 by the WEF, Gartner, and Verizon highlights the need for organizations to reassess their security policies and data management practices as AI adoption increases.

In particular, the use of unauthorized AI tools, the uncontrolled sharing of sensitive information, and the access permissions granted to AI agents are expected to remain key cybersecurity concerns in the coming years.

To benefit from the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence safely, it is becoming increasingly important not only to understand how to use these technologies but also to recognize what information is being shared and how that information is protected.
