Encryption

In software and information technology, encryption is the process of transforming data using specific mathematical methods to prevent unauthorized individuals from reading or understanding it. Encryption is one of the key components of data security and can be used in many different areas, from internet communications to file storage.

How Does Encryption Work?

During the encryption process, readable data is transformed into a different format using an algorithm. This transformed data is called ciphertext. Converting the data back into a readable form is performed through the decryption process.

The method and key used in this process determine how the data will be transformed. A key can be thought of as a piece of special information used during encryption and decryption.

Types of Encryption

Encryption methods can be categorized according to the structure of the keys used and how the encryption process is performed. The most common approaches are symmetric and asymmetric encryption.

  • Symmetric Encryption: The same key is used to encrypt and decrypt the data. It can be preferred when large amounts of data need to be processed quickly.
  • Asymmetric Encryption: Uses two different but mathematically related keys. One is generally a public key that can be shared, while the other is a private key that must be kept secret.
  • Hybrid Encryption: Combines symmetric and asymmetric encryption methods. Many secure communication systems use both approaches to benefit from their respective advantages.

Where Is Encryption Used?

Encryption can be found behind many digital services used in everyday life. Its purpose is to help protect data against unauthorized access while it is being transmitted or stored.

For example, HTTPS, which is used when connecting to a website, helps secure communication between the client and the server. Similarly, various encryption methods may be used by messaging applications, file systems, and databases.

Difference Between Encryption and Hashing

Encryption and hashing are different concepts. Encryption is a process in which data can be converted back into an accessible form using the appropriate key or method. Hashing, on the other hand, involves generating a fixed-length summary value from data.

The purpose of hashing is not to directly retrieve the original data from the hash value. For this reason, hashing is commonly used in different scenarios, particularly for verifying data integrity and storing passwords.

Benefits of Encryption

Encryption contributes to protecting digital information and establishing secure communication. Depending on the use case, it can support different security requirements.

  • Confidentiality: Makes it difficult for unauthorized individuals to read the data.
  • Data security: Helps protect stored or transmitted information.
  • Secure communication: Supports the protection of data exchanged between systems.
  • Data integrity: Certain cryptographic methods can help determine whether data has been modified.

Encryption is one of the fundamental technologies that supports data confidentiality and security in the digital world. Symmetric, asymmetric, and hybrid methods can be used according to different requirements. From internet communications to data storage, encryption is used across many areas and forms one of the key security layers of modern information technology systems.
