Phishing

Phishing is a social engineering technique that aims to trick users into revealing passwords, account information, or other sensitive data. It is commonly known as phishing in English. It is typically carried out through messages, emails, or websites that impersonate trusted individuals or organizations.

How Does Phishing Work?

In phishing attacks, the attacker aims to create a sense of trust or urgency in the user. To achieve this, fake communications may be designed to appear as though they come from a bank, shipping company, social media platform, or well-known organization.

The message usually asks the user to click a link, open a file, or provide information. When the user is redirected to a fake website, the information they enter may be obtained by the attackers.

Types of Phishing

Phishing attacks can be carried out through different communication channels and against different target groups. The scope of the attack and how it reaches users can vary depending on the method used.

  • Email Phishing: Attempts to deceive users through fake or manipulated emails.
  • SMS Phishing (Smishing): Uses text messages to distribute fake links or redirects.
  • Voice Phishing (Vishing): Attempts to obtain information from users through phone calls or voice messages.
  • Spear Phishing: Uses more personalized messages targeting a specific individual or organization.
  • Impersonation: Attempts to create trust by imitating a trusted person, organization, or service.

How Can You Identify a Phishing Attack?

Phishing messages are not always easy to recognize. However, certain indicators can help determine whether a message or website is suspicious.

Unexpected messages, unusual links, and statements urging users to take immediate action should be examined carefully. The sender's address, the domain name of the destination website, and the language used in the message can all be checked.

How to Protect Against Phishing

To reduce the risk of phishing, users should be cautious when communicating digitally. Even when a message appears to come from a trusted organization, its source should be verified before taking the requested action.

  • Check links: Before clicking, examine the address the link leads to.
  • Review sender information: Verify whether the email address or phone number actually belongs to the organization it claims to represent.
  • Avoid opening unexpected files: Be cautious with attachments received from unknown sources.
  • Use strong authentication methods: Additional security measures such as Two-Factor Authentication can help protect accounts.
  • Report suspicious messages: Use the reporting or notification channels provided by organizations to report suspicious communications.

Difference Between Phishing and Spam

Phishing and spam may appear similar, but they are not the same concept. Spam refers to unwanted messages, usually sent in bulk. The primary purpose of phishing, on the other hand, is to deceive users into sharing information or performing a specific action.

A message can be both spam and phishing. However, not every spam message is intended to obtain information from the user.

Phishing is a significant cybersecurity threat that attempts to deceive users through communications impersonating trusted individuals or organizations. It can occur through various channels, including email, SMS, and phone calls. Carefully examining messages, checking links, and using additional security measures can help reduce the risk of phishing.
