Difference Between a Port and an IP Address

An IP address helps identify a device or network interface on a network. A port, on the other hand, is used to identify the application or service on that device with which communication should take place.

Simply put, an IP address helps indicate which device to reach, while a port number helps indicate which service on that device should receive the communication. Therefore, IP address and port information are often considered together in network communication.
