Ransomware

Ransomware is a type of malware used to prevent access to files on computers, servers, or other digital systems, or to make data unusable. It is known as ransomware in English. Attackers typically make a demand in exchange for restoring access.

How Does Ransomware Work?

When ransomware reaches a system, it may first target specific files or system resources. Depending on the method used, files may be encrypted, preventing users from accessing them normally.

While some ransomware focuses only on restricting access to files, other types may also attempt to exfiltrate data from the system. Therefore, the impact can vary depending on the characteristics of the ransomware and the structure of the targeted system.

How Does Ransomware Spread?

Ransomware can reach systems through various attack methods. These may include users unknowingly running a malicious file or attackers targeting a system with a security vulnerability.

Common methods of distribution include phishing emails, malicious file attachments, fake websites, and untrusted software. Security vulnerabilities in outdated systems may also be exploited in some attacks.

Types of Ransomware

Ransomware can be classified in different ways based on how it operates. While some types directly restrict access to files, others may attempt to make an entire system unusable.

  • Encrypting ransomware: Attempts to prevent users from accessing their data by encrypting files.
  • Screen lockers: Attempt to prevent normal use by restricting access to the system or device screen.
  • Double-extortion ransomware: In addition to encrypting data, may threaten to publish or disclose the stolen information.
  • Ransomware as a Service (RaaS): A business model that allows ransomware infrastructure to be used by different individuals.

How to Protect Against Ransomware

Reducing ransomware risk requires a combination of technical measures and secure user practices. Regularly backing up important data can be particularly helpful in reducing the impact of potential data loss.

  • Regular backups: Ensures that up-to-date copies of important files are stored separately.
  • Up-to-date software: Helps ensure that security updates for operating systems and applications are applied.
  • Email awareness: Encourages users to check suspicious emails and attachments before opening them.
  • Access permissions: Helps ensure that users can access only the systems and files they need.
  • Security tools: Can help detect malware and monitor suspicious activities.

Difference Between Ransomware and Viruses

Ransomware and viruses are not the same thing. A virus is a type of malware that can spread by attaching itself to other files or programs. The primary purpose of ransomware, on the other hand, is to affect users by preventing access to files or systems.

However, ransomware is also a type of malware. How malicious software spreads and what actions it performs can vary depending on its characteristics.

Ransomware is an important type of malware that can prevent access to files and systems. Using up-to-date software, being cautious with suspicious content, and regularly backing up important data are fundamental practices that can help improve security against these threats.
