SSL

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a security protocol designed to enable the secure transmission of data over the internet. Although TLS has largely replaced SSL technology today, the term “SSL certificate” continues to be widely used. It plays an important role in establishing secure connections, particularly for websites.

How Does SSL Work?

SSL helps encrypt communication between a user and a website. When a user connects to a website, a secure connection is established between the browser and the server, helping protect data while it is being transmitted.

Digital certificates are used during this process. A certificate contains information that helps associate a domain name with a specific server and supports the establishment of a secure connection.

What is an SSL Certificate?

An SSL certificate is a digital certificate that enables a website to use a secure connection. It supports the encryption of communication between a web browser and a web server and contains technical information that helps users determine whether they are connected securely.

Websites with SSL certificates typically use the https:// protocol. The padlock icon displayed in a browser's address bar can also indicate that the connection is established over HTTPS.

Difference Between SSL and TLS

SSL and TLS are protocols associated with secure internet communication. Older versions of SSL are no longer used, and modern web connections rely on current versions of the TLS protocol.

Despite this, the term “SSL” is still commonly used in everyday and non-technical contexts to refer to website security certificates. For this reason, SSL certificates and TLS technology are often mentioned together.

Types of SSL Certificates

SSL certificates can be categorized based on their validation processes and intended purposes. The appropriate certificate depends on the needs and use case of the website.

  • Domain Validated (DV): A basic certificate type that focuses on verifying control over the domain.
  • Organization Validated (OV): Includes verification of the organization associated with the domain.
  • Extended Validation (EV): Requires a more comprehensive validation process.

Why Is SSL Important?

SSL and the TLS-based secure connections used today help protect data transmitted over the internet. Using a secure connection is particularly important when users submit information through websites.

  • Data security: Helps protect transmitted information during communication.
  • Authentication: Supports verification of the relationship between the website's domain and its certificate.
  • HTTPS: Enables websites to operate over secure HTTPS connections.
  • User trust: Security indicators in browsers can help users recognize that a connection is secure.

Conclusion

SSL is an important technology that helps secure communication between websites and users. Although TLS is technically used today, the term “SSL certificate” remains widely used. As a foundation of HTTPS connections, this technology is an important component of web security.
