What does a Product Owner do?

Product Owner is the person who directs the entire development process of a product or project. They work with methodologies such as Agile and Scrum. They explain the goals of the product's lifecycle to the relevant teams and direct other teams to take action.

The Product Owner analyzes the demands of internal and external stakeholders to understand user needs and business requirements. It ensures that these needs are prioritized. It receives feedback from stakeholders and also analyzes market research.

Being a Product Owner is based on prioritizing the team's work. It prioritizes the parts related to which tasks should be completed first. Evaluates these prioritizations in terms of goals and strategies. Keeps a list of all tasks required for the development of the product in the product backlog.

Since they work together with software teams, they answer questions and try to guide the team in the right way. They ensure that the process is planned correctly by holding meetings with the software team at the beginning of the sprint processes. They contribute to the successful completion of the sprint by giving feedback at every stage of the development process.

The Product Owner makes the necessary Benchmarks for a product or project to maintain its competitive advantage and informs the relevant teams. Being customer-oriented and striving for continuous improvement of the product are among the most important characteristics of the Product Owner.

  • Contributes to product vision, manages product backlog.
  • Backlog ensures that items are sequential and understandable.
  • Maximizes the value of the Development Team's work.
  • Ensures that the Development Team understands the Backlog items as needed.

How to become a Product Owner?

Especially graduates of departments such as marketing and business administration can adapt to Product teams more easily. The basic knowledge acquired at school on this subject will be a plus in the development of their careers.

To have basic knowledge about product management and Scrum, you can attend the necessary trainings and read books on this field. It is very important to master methodologies such as Scrum and Kanban among Agile methods in order to carry out projects correctly.

It will be advantageous to participate in certificate programs on project management methodologies, especially Scrum.

There are some tools that Prodcut Owners use. It is important to know project management tools such as Jira, Trello, Asana. In addition to these, applications such as Microsoft Teams and Slack used within the company will also contribute to the easier execution of the work.
