What does a Business Analyst do?

A Business Analyst is a person who examines and analyzes business processes, systems and projects within an organization and makes recommendations for improvement.

Business Analysts gather, identify and document requirements in collaboration with users, stakeholders and business unit representatives to understand business processes, projects or systems.

In addition, by examining the business processes within the organization, they can identify opportunities to increase efficiency and develop process improvements and automation recommendations as a result of these analyzes.

In some cases, they can extract meaningful information from data using data mining and data analytics techniques. The ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders is very important for business analysts. Issues such as determining business requirements and the progress of projects are situations that require open communication.

Business Analysts should know the software and technologies used by the organization. This is essential to correctly identify system requirements and effectively integrate technological solutions. In some cases, business analysts also participate in testing processes to verify whether the developed systems meet business requirements.

When necessary, business analysts prepare training materials for users to understand new systems more easily and even provide training where needed.

Analytical thinking, effective and clear communication and problem solving skills are important competencies for business analysts.

How to become a Business Analyst?

In general, an education in fields such as business, mathematics, computer science is important for a certain foundation in this field. Since the business analyst role requires bringing together technical and business requirements, it will be advantageous to have these skills. As business analysts vary in the sectors they want to work in, we recommend that you follow seminars and trainings for the relevant sector.

Current and industry-recognized business analyst certifications include CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional) by IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis) and PMI-PBA (Professional in Business Analysis) by PMI (Project Management Institute). Obtaining these certifications will put you one step ahead.

Business Analysts use a variety of tools and techniques, such as setting requirements, analyzing data and modeling business processes. It is important to learn these tools and techniques. Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Visio and data mining software are examples of these tools.
